In the initial session, we take time getting to know you and hearing your story. We want to know what brought you into therapy, whats been your journey and what you hope to accomplish during our time together. We focus on taking time learning you and building your trust. We will also discuss confidentiality, complete paperwork and develop your goals for our time together. These goals will be measurable, will consist of a specific timeframe and include specific person(s) involved in helping you meet the goal.
Examples of Goals
- To decrease my anger from 10 to 4 (on a scale of 1-10, where 10 is the most intense form of my anger) by Christmas time.
- To express my hurt towards my mother when I visit her in 4 weeks.
- To engage in meaningful interactions with my spouse before we go on vacation.
- To resolve a traumatic memory of abuse and reduce my reactive responses in 3 months.
These goals may change throughout our work together. Nevertheless, at the end of each session, you never leave empty handed.
In the sessions thereafter, we continue to build on knowing you, begin implementing appropriate interventions and work towards helping you reach your goals.
